PHEAR PARK BOWLING CLUB REPORT 2009 Robert William Axon was an early member of Phear Park bowls club and at the time of his death in 1941, club chairman. For the past 60 years invited clubs have competed for the Axon Cup. This year’s winners were the home rink of Roy Bateman, Hilary Higgins, John Robins and Margaret Adams (skip). It was a special day for other reasons as all participants were invited to share a drink and cake with Phear Park’s oldest member Harry Wilkes, who celebrated his 94th birthday. And what’s more Harry’s rink finished second. A strong lobby is building to have the Axon cup played in future on Harry’s birthday. The Dick Mann trophy, postponed because of rain, was played to a conclusion and was won by the triple of Gerry Sharland, Liz Robins and John Anderson. Phear Park A travelled to Heavitree for an over-60s league fixture but they never got going and lost on both rinks and overall by 20 shots. The B team fared a little better drawing 35 shots apiece at home to Tiverton. Dave Martin’s triple of Roy Bateman and Brian Green started poorly but fought back to 12-13 only to lose momentum and go down by 24 shots to 14. The second rink turned out to be the Gerry Sharland show. After nine ends scores were level until Sharland converted one shot down to six up. Sharland still needed a brilliant final wood to ensure the overall scores were tied, with his rink of Lawrie Harries and Peter Burch winning by 21 shots to 11. Phear Park ladies lost to top of the table Crediton in an unbadged triples league home fixture. Crediton won overall by 31 shots to 27. Phear Park’s triple of Janet Martin, Margo Allen and skip Shona Forrester won by 15 shots to 13 to secure two points for the home team. An excellent home win for Phear Park over Seaton by 89 shots to 52. John Robins led the way as he skipped Harry Wilkes, Jenny Derbyshire and Peter Burch to a convincing 27-11 win. David Lloyd, Hilary Higgins Richard Cooper and David Evans (skip) finished 25-8 ahead. While Jim Letten, Peter Higgins, Glenda Pope and skip Tom Russell were 21-13 winners.
