PHEAR PARK BOWLS REPORT 27/7/2010 Fine bowling by Phear Park ladies saw them win the Pomeroy trophy at neighbours Madeira. Always a keenly contested competition for invited rinks, this was the first time Phear Park ladies had won the trophy for ten years. The successful rink was Liz Young, Isabel Richards, Joan Evans and Sarah Westacott (skip). (photo below) Westacott had a very successful week as she also won her way into the section final of the ladies unbadged singles competition where she will meet an opponent from Seaton. Phear Park “A” travelled to Exonia to fulfil a fixture in the over-60s league and went down to a narrow 32 shots to 30 defeat. Two points were gained through David Evans’ triple of Richard Cooper and Tom Russell who were 19 – 15 winners, Park’s B team were away at Culm Vale and came away with the maximum eight points. Gerry Sharland’s triple of Chas Coates and David Martin were comfortable winners by 20 shots to 11. But Lawrie Harries, Mike Pope and skip Brian Green were engaged in a fierce tussle where 15 of the 18 ends were decided by a single shot before the Park trio emerged 13 – 12 winners. In the ladies unbadged triples league Madeira ran out winners by 15 shots although Liz Young, Gillian Harding and Glenda Pope (skip) rescued two points for Park with a one shot victory. Park entertained Pratten Tourists in a six rink friendly and finished 45 shots ahead. Most of the damage was done by Bob Smith’s rink of Gillian Harding, Fred Wood and Paul Westacott who finished 37 – 11 ahead. Liz Young, Peter Higgins, Betty Bourne and David Martin (skip) won by 18 shots. John Robins’ rink of Les Parr, Mavis Wood and Richard Cooper won by seven shots; while Gerry Sharland skipped Janet Martin, Anne Harding and Mike Pope to a 27 – 10 win. A four rink triples with Exonia resulted in a win for Park by 87 shots to 51. The best performance came from Janet Martin, David Lloyd and Glenda Pope (skip) winners by 29 – 7. Comfortable wins also for Liz Young, Richard Cooper and skip David Martin and the triple of Rob Mottershead, Betty Bourne and skip Mike Pope.
