PHEAR PARK BOWLS
REPORT
Phear Park’s special season marking the centenary of the club’s
formation drew to a close last week.
An
incident packed season concluded with friendlies against neighbours
Budleigh Salterton and tourists Stothert and Pitt from Bath.
Regular readers will know that in local derbies “explanations” are
prepared in the unlikely event of a defeat. Budleigh explained that
they turned up for a 2.00pm start but the edge went off their game while
waiting for Park bowlers who strolled in for a 2.30pm start
Park
won two of the four triples played, and by 13 shots overall. John
Robins, Ron Rooke and John Anderson (skip) finished 20 shots to 9
ahead.John Dill, David Dowden and skip Peter Burch won by 19 shots to
10, While Les Parr’s rink of Jim Letten and Richard Cooper scored a four
on the last end to steal a draw at 17 shots each.
In
the final game of the season, Park defeated Stothart & Pitt by 103 shots
to 79. Glenda Pope’s rink of Richard Cooper, Faye Downend and John
Whyte had a terrific scrap before emerging winners by 19 – 18.
Roy
Bateman, Gillian Harding, Bob Smith and John Anderson (skip) took five
shots on the last four ends to end up 19 – 16 winners. A much more
comfortable win for Liz Young, Jenny Derbyshire, Mike Pope and skip Tom
Russell who cruised home 27 – 14.
Margaret Lock, Anne Harding, Peter Burch and John Dill won by 22 shots
to 15. But Dave Martin’s rink of Janet Martin, Jim Letten, and John
Robins needed a two on the last end to emerge with a draw.
The
social side of activities ended with a roll up, spider and fish supper
organised by Janet and David Martin. The Phear Park ladies choir gave
an impromptu concert with their rendering of Show Me the Way to Go Home
generating a forest of fingers pointing to the front door – not that
that our songbirds took the hint. But when they started on Old
MacDonald had a Farm ……!
Undoubtedly, 2011 was a unique year for Phear Park bowling club and
officers, committee, catering department and individual members are to
be congratulated on their commitment and hard work which made the
special season so enjoyable and successful.
The
club’s annual general meeting will be held on Saturday, 12 November..
